5月7日 躲着 'The subject of life is making choices.' - Satre。 Well, the tragedy of it is not making any of those. 从外语楼资料室去厕所,墙上有Satre那句话,我觉得好像只有加上我的回应才算有点意义。但不能分辨我是第一次看见(very unlikely),还是因为,过去读过那句话的我已不同。
正好在图书馆里随手挑到一本好书,Frye's notebook and diaries. 一个美国当代文论家零星记下的思考。里面一条和上面那段很合:Reading. I suppose it is true what I think Roland Barthes says somewhere: that only rereading counts, because all first reading faces not a text but a mirror. (阅读:好像是罗兰巴特在什么地方说过,只有重读才算数,所有东西第一次读,你看到的始终不是文字,而只是一面镜子。我现在觉得那是对的。)那句Satre的saying,可能以前读过,照出的是那时的我。一条河流不能洗濯两只相同的脚丫。
Over the lunch, talking with someone about the Future, which frights me so much as a concept nowadays, left me dazzled afterwards. 还是躲回资料室继续读Frye吧。管他呢。此公趣味与我相投,笔记快把我手都抄断了。English Writers都是他妈话痨,读的时候觉得轻快,一抄起来觉得怎么也抄不完。但是翻几页读到一条太好又忍不住抄起来。
他讲到中国的禅,Samual Butler不懂,他说他懂,因为他辨得the power of paradox. I suppose it is true. Paradox即貌似与common sense相抵牾,仔细一想有道理。很多禅都放屁似的,但正因为上帝荒谬,所以往往正反两面都是道理。Wilde那么多paradox,原来只是借力!Yes, paradox is easy to make.就在去厕所的路上我这么想。Take a proverb, and distort it in the counter-intuitive way. Then, Bang, you have a paradox. 只是质量上有好坏,这是自然的。比如,Love conquers everything. 反过来说,everything conqures love. 好像更有道理。就像我以前看到过的一句话,love conquers all things but poverty and toothache.意思一样。再比如,knowledge is power,反过来说,power is knowledge. 谁牛谁有理。为什么华盛顿爸爸不打他?因为小华盛顿手里拿着斧头。然后,我就到了厕所。 抄到后面手真的快抽筋了。想把书放回书架,可以日后继续读。捧着书走过去的时候,翻到封底,上面Harold Bloom赞誉道,“Frye is surely the major literature critic in English language... a kind of Miltonic figure. He is certainly the largest and most crucial literary critic in the English language since the divine Walter [Pater] and the divine Oscar [Wilde]; he really is that good.”Frye当然是英语世界中最重要的批评家之一,一个米尔顿级别的人物。毋庸置疑,在非凡的佩特和非凡的王尔德之后的英语文学评论界,他是最负声望和最重要的一位。没错,他真有那么好。 我前两天正在背Pater的Preface to Studies in the History of the Renaissance, 一本影响Wilde最大的书(I guess),至少王尔德是佩特的门徒,他觉得佩特的英文独步天下。而且上个月买了本王尔德文集,正在读The Critic as Artist。世事巧妙,阅读更是如此,我捧书回座继续读Frye. |
